Hawa Imani Children's Home

About Us

Imani Children Home (Full registration name is Hawa Imani Children Home CDEN No.
000084) is situated in Murang’a District, one of the districts of Kenya's Central
Province. Its capital town is also now named Murang’a but was previously called Fort
Hall (in colonial times before 1963). It is inhabited mainly by and is considered the
home of the Kikuyu, the largest tribe in Kenya.

History

When missionaries first came to Kenya, they were prevented from settling on the coast
by the Portuguese, who had taken the coastal area, strategic for trade, from Arab
powers in the 16th century. The missionaries were forced to venture into Kenya's
rugged interior, and Murang’a was the one of the first place they settled.

When the British set up the East African Protectorate in 1895, their first administrative
post, Fort Smith, was located in Murang’a.

One on the main highlights of Muranga's history, however, is that as the Mau Mau
uprising was led by the Kikuyu tribe and the Kikuyu consider Murang’a their homeland,
Murang’a is considered by some as the birthplace of the Kenyan independence
movement.

Kiria-ini town is only few miles away from Othaya town, the home town of the current
president of Kenya His Excellency Hon. Mwai Kibaki. Kiria-ini town is surrounded by
Hilly Mountains, rivers and other tourist attraction points. It is a coffee growing zone and
partly Tea growing zone. It is a traditional square lined shops town with a large market
at the center popularly known for all sorts of goods including cattle and goats.
